Protecting your Eyes from Vapours

Most nail products release vapours into the air. Not all of these vapours are scented but they are all potentially dangerous to the health. One particular part of the body which can suffer from such vapours is the eyes.

It is not always possible to eliminate vapours completely from a salon; however you can help to protect your eyes.

Protecting the Eyes

There are a few things that you need to know about vapours and how they can potentially affect your eyes. Firstly if you wear contact lenses you need to be aware that soft contact lenses can absorb vapours. This would be extremely damaging to the eyes and even if you wear safety glasses with contact lenses, it will still not protect them from the vapours. So it would be much more beneficial to simply not wear contact lenses whilst you are working in the salon.

You should still wear safety glasses no matter whether or not you do usually wear contact lenses. They may not give much protection against vapours, but they will help to stop pieces of nail from getting into the eyes. Whilst it is not a very good idea, many nail technicians choose to cut off old overlay. This can lead to chips of nail getting into the eyes, therefore protective eyewear is beneficial.

Whilst it isn’t possible to stop vapours being released into the air altogether, there are things that you can do to reduce them. For example, you could ensure that all nail products are securely closed when they are not in use. If you are working with solvent that is used to get rid of artificial nails, try and keep the bowl covered up with something such as a towel so that the vapours do not continuously get released into the air.

Having a good level of ventilation is also required. You should contact a specialist who will be able to advise you as to what type of ventilation would be better for your salon. Whatever you do, you should never place fans in the salon to eliminate the vapours. They will simply push the vapours around the room, increasing the chances of you inhaling them.

Overall there are ways in which you can protect the eyes from the vapours produced by nail products. By following the above advice you will have the best possible chance of protecting them and reducing the amount of vapours that are released into the salon environment.
