Protecting Yourself and Your Clients from Inhalation

No matter which career you decide to choose, there will always be various health and safety guidelines that you will have to follow. Working in a nail salon is no different and there are so many factors that you need to consider in order to keep your working environment safe.

Inhalation of chemicals is one particular problem which you could experience in a salon environment. This is because all nail products come with a vapour that is released into the air. These chemicals can be dangerous in high quantities and they can cause various health problems.

Understanding Nail Salon Vapours

You mainly associated vapours with distinct smells in the air. However, there are some nail products that may not cause a smell but which can still be harmful if inhaled. Typically the vapours are found low to the ground. This means that they are not always inhaled, but they are still present in the room.

Nail products which are used in spray formation are the ones that need to be watched. Obviously sprays will cause some of the product to enter directly into the air. There are ways in which you can avoid this however, but it is something to be aware of.

Avoiding Vapour Problems

There are many ways in which you can avoid potential vapour problems in a salon. One of them is to install good ventilation. However if you are working in a fairly small salon then a large ventilation system could prove to be too costly. You should only consider a large ventilation system if the salon you are working with is fairly large itself. If not then you should choose the smallest ventilation system possible.

It is always a good idea to seek professional advice before you install a ventilation system into your salon. That way a professional can tell you what type of system would be better suited to your needs and they can properly install it for you too.

Many nail technicians consider putting a fan into the room to eliminate the vapours. However what you need to keep in mind with this is that most fans will simply move the air around. They will not eliminate the vapours and they could in fact make the problem worse, not better. If you do choose a fan then stick to an extractor fan as that will effectively eliminate vapours around the room. Just remember to position them correctly and to have enough of them to adequately do the job.

Using pump sprays is another way to avoid vapours being breathed in. Pump spray products cause fewer vapours to be released into the air.

Overall vapours can be a problem in a salon and they are sometimes unavoidable. Your goal as a nail technician is to place enough ventilation in the salon to remove most of the vapours.
