Dealing with Corrosive and Irritant Materials

As a nail technician you will regularly be using corrosive and irritant products during your treatments. It is vital that you use these products properly if you want to avoid any potential problems. The irritants that are used in the salon can cause a bad reaction to anybody who comes into contact with them. Here you will find out more about how to avoid potential problems with the chemicals that you use.

Understanding Which Products are Potentially Harmful

There are quite a few products which contain potentially harmful chemicals. These include:

• Acid Based Primer
• Nail Adhesive

The acid based primer is typically used in artificial nail systems. If it comes into contact with the skin then it will cause itching and the skin will be temporarily damaged. You can remove it by placing the affected area in cold running water.

Nail adhesives are also potentially dangerous. If you manage to spill the adhesive onto the skin then it can cause a chemical burn. The problem is made slightly worse if the adhesive is spilt onto the clothing and it manages to penetrate through to the skin. It will cause quite severe burning if that happens as the chemicals react badly to manmade fibres. If contact does occur through the clothing then it would not be uncommon for you to need cosmetic surgery to correct the damage that is done.

All potentially dangerous products and chemicals should come with a warning on the label. However there are some products that do not have a warning on their label and they are still just as potentially harmful as the ones that do. You can always get a document known as the Material Safety Data Sheet from the supplier. This is provided to everyone who purchases and uses a potentially harmful substance.

Protecting Clients and Yourself from Allergies

Some chemicals can cause an allergic reaction when they come into contact with the skin. Unfortunately the level of contact needed to cause a reaction for each chemical is different from person to person. So whilst a person may suffer a reaction to a small amount of a chemical, another may need a larger quantity to suffer a reaction.

Due to the fact that most nail products contain irritants, if they are used frequently over a long period of time then sensitivity could build up. This would cause the person to suffer a reaction and so it is advisable to avoid using nail products frequently over a long period of time.
